This quote may apply to some of us, and it certainly applies to the cells and tissues in our body. In particular, a variety of cells in orthopaedic tissues (bone, cartilage, tendons) respond to, and interact with, their environments, greatly influencing their behavior. These are especially important during injury and disease (e.g., osteoarthritis, fracture), and a better understanding of these environments may help us guide new treatments and therapies. During this Atlanta Science Tavern, you will hear about how cells “feel” and respond to their environments, how this changes during injury, and ways we may be able to modify a cell’s environment to improve repair of injured tissues.
Jay Patel is a biomedical engineer, with a research focus on orthopaedic repair and regeneration. He is originally from Northern New Jersey, and received his Ph.D. from Rutgers University. He then completed his postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania and the Philadelphia VA. In September 2020, Jay started as an Assistant Professor in Orthopaedics at Emory University and a Health Science Specialist at the Atlanta VA Medical Center. Outside of his research, Jay’s interests include watching and playing sports, animals (especially dogs), and NE IPA’s.
