What public policies are most effective at addressing climate change? Planting trees? Reducing air pollution? Electric vehicles? Improved energy efficiency in buildings? Increasing the price of carbon pollution? More nuclear power? What policies are needed to keep the growth in average global temperature from exceeding the Paris Agreement limit of 2.0°C (3.6°F), and achieve the goal of 1.5°C (2.7°F)? Doug will demonstrate an interactive climate simulator, which grew out of work conducted at MIT Sloan. You will be welcome to ask for a demonstration of solutions you’re curious about. Doug will suggest some ideas about what each of us can do to bring about a hopeful future.

Doug lives with his wife in Fayetteville, Georgia, and has 2 children and 2 grandchildren.  He retired from Portland General Electric Company (PGE) as Vice President and General Counsel responsible for all Company legal matters, including those relating to PGE’s diverse electric power generation system, which consisted of nuclear, coal, gas, hydro and wind power generation.

Before his 17 years at PGE, Doug was an Assistant General Counsel for nuclear power at the Tennessee Valley Authority where he worked for 18 years. Before earning his J.D. from the University of Denver Law School, he served six years on active duty as a naval officer, including chief engineer on a Navy destroyer.  After active duty he served in the naval reserve for another 20 years, retiring as a Navy Captain. Doug graduated from Oregon State University where he majored in oceanography.

He been active in numerous community activities, and enjoys hiking, photography, and volunteering for organizations advocating for effective bipartisan actions to limit the effects of climate change, especially the nonprofit Citizens’ Climate Lobby (CCL) seeking bipartisan legislation at a national level.  Doug is also an En-ROADS Climate Ambassador to show the relative effectiveness of different climate change solutions
